STATE LIBRARY ANNOUNCES 2010 AWARD WINNERS
Historian, author and University of Queensland librarian Dr Jeff Rickertt is the 2010 winner of the prestigious $20,000 State Library of Queensland John Oxley Fellowship.
State Librarian Lea Giles-Peters said Dr Rickertt, University of Queensland Fyrer Library librarian and author of Resistance on the Line, was awarded the fellowship to research and write a biography of Ernest Lane, titled Ernie Lane, Australian Labour’s Resolute Rebel.
“The Fellowship is one of four annual awards presented by the State Library to acknowledge the work of individuals and communities organisations dedicated to recording and documenting Queensland history,” Ms Giles-Peters said.
“The State Library of Queensland Awards also increases awareness and appreciation of the state’s history and the role of libraries in keeping and increasing this knowledge.
“The research conducted by previous John Oxley Library Fellows has made a significant contribution to understanding Queensland’s collective past, as Dr Rickertt’s research will in 2010 and 2011.
“Each year the John Oxley Fellow brings to light forgotten narratives of the people, places and communities of Queensland and allows us to make new and varied connections to fragments of history which otherwise may be lost.”
Ms Giles-Peters also announced Professor Kay Saunders the winner of the $5000 John Oxley Library Award, Jeff Moore from the North Stradbroke Island Historical Museum recipient of the $5000 John Oxley Library Community History Award and Professor Christine Bruce winner of the $5000 Library Board of Queensland Award.
“This year’s award recipients have pioneered techniques which encourage new ways of gathering information in our complex 21st century environment,” she said.
“They have improved our ability to tap into knowledge which continues to shape us as contemporary Australians.”
The State Library of Queensland Awards were presented on Thursday 15 July at a ceremony hosted by Deborah Fleming of Australian Story and The Courier-Mail and Sunday Mail Editor in Chief David Fagan.
