Of arms and the man in Ukraine

Arma virumque cano (“Of arms and the man I sing”) – Virgil
Generals are like surgeons, they bury their mistakes.

Viewers of the video (50,000 soldiers dead in Ukraine?) below should remember Russia has not yet declared war on Ukraine; so Putin has not called on all the soldiers and equipment available under general mobilisation after a declaration of war.

Why did the Russian military blow up the dam wall on the Dnieper River near Zelenski’s home town? And why did Zelenski call them cowards for doing so as if he believes war is made up of heroes and cowards? The answer to the first question is Russians are probably trying to prevent Ukranian forces from crossing the river by flooding all the pontoon bridges and washing them downstream. Floods regularly do that where I live (Brisbane).

No Glory in Ukraine war

One of the videos in the YouTube podcast by self proclaimed war expert, Jake Broe, shows captured 18-year-old Russian soldiers. How can Zelensky call them cowards, they have barely emerged from childhood. There is no glory in war, as Broe points out there are 50,000 soldiers dead on the Russian side and probably nearly as many civilians and soldiers on the Ukrainian side.

The military is no place for the young, they have a life to explore.

Another video in this series by ‘expert’ Jake Broe who usually comments on financial markets admonishes Iran for supplying Russians with drones. This kind of double standard will not help in negotiating a peace. Especially when most of Europe, and nearly all of the West are supplying Ukraine with arms.

The Australian government should change tack and insist that its allies in the conflict (US, NATO) call a ceasefire in Ukraine.
