Saving UQ Union complex Heritage submissions due this week
The opportunity for written submissions in support of our heritage application closes this Friday, 7 June. If you haven’t already, please make a submission. It doesn’t have to be long or technical or analytical. It doesn’t have to be about architecture or design, as important as these things are. It simply needs to address one or more of the criteria we have addressed in our application. It can be your account of your personal association with the centre and why you believe these buildings are important enough to our collective history to warrant preservation. You have probably already heard about the Special General Meeting of the UQ Union at the Schonell Theatre last Wednesday. Called to discuss who should control the Schonell Theatre (or its replacement) and whether UQU should support the university hosting a ‘Western civilisation’ degree offered by the Ramsay Centre, the meeting attracted more students than the Schonell could hold. Several dozen people had to wait outside. To uproarious acclaim the students unanimously supported union control of the Schonell and overwhelmingly rejected the Ramsay degree. It was one of the liveliest and most passionate student gatherings at UQ in decades.
So today, only two

the second shows students jammed into the Schonell in 2019. Over 50 years of
jamming the system. What’s not to like?
