Lift the embargo on Cuba

It has taken six months for this postcard to arrive from Cuba to Australia; posted in May 2018 it has just arrived in November of the same year.

I suspect it has something to do with the US embargo. I don’t know for sure but it strikes me that isolating Cuba economically from the rest of the world makes no sense. I’m not alone in that thinking, 189 nation states in the United Nations think the same.

It is time the US embargo on Cuba was lifted.

Someone visiting United States later in the year asked me have over being there. I said no. Asked why I said I won’t go unless the US lifts its embargo on Cuba. I recommend others do the same. I may not go anyway, given the nature of US imperialism.

UN Votes 189-2 against the US Blockade of Cuba
The Brisbane branch of the Australia-Cuba Friendship Society joins with the vast majority of humanity in condemning the US blockade of Cuba, and welcomes the overwhelming international condemnation of the blockade by the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday 1st November.

In a tweet posted on the evening before, the U.S. mission to the United Nations positioned the vote as a choice on who has the moral high ground. ‘Every year Cuba puts forth a resolution that blames Cuba’s poverty, repression, and lack of freedom on the United States. Tomorrow the U.N. will hear what we have to say about that and countries will have to vote between Cuba or the U.S. Who will vote with us?’

Well the answer was: Israel.

The motion was passed 189 to 2 without abstentions.
