Brisbane Celebrations

This years May Day will be celebrated by a march that will commence on the corner of Wharf and Turbot Streets, Spring Hill at 10am and finish at the RNA ‘Ekka’ Showgrounds where there will be union tents, food and music.
Music
Jumping Fences will be playing at the Labour Day celebrations in the RNA Showgrounds on this Monday, along with others playing at Foco Nuevo – members of the Combined Unions’ Choir and Phil Monsour.
The music will be starting around 12.30 or so and Jumping Fences will be on between 1 and 1.30.
“May Day was celebrated in Brisbane by a large and enthusiastic meeting in the Domain in the afternoon and at the Cremorne Theatre on the evening of May l.
At the Domain G. Brown … and H. Bennett were the principal speakers.
At the Cremorne meeting … the following motion was moved:
‘That: this meeting of Brisbane’ citizens, conveys its fraternal greetings to the workers of every land, pledges its continued opposition to militarism in all its forms, and declares that the only solution of the world’s economic chaos is to be found in the social ownership of the principal means of production, distribution and exchange.’
The resolution was enthusiastically carried and the meeting terminated with the finding of the ‘Red Flag.’
According to the cables May Day passed on quietly in Europe.
In Sydney a procession headed by the Red Flag passed through the city.
The capitalist daily Press, with its usual filth, repeated that the Union Jack was burnt by the demonstrators.
The fact was that some foolish individual did so (sic).

International Day
May Day, or Worker’s Day, is celebrated in honor of the Martyrs of Chicago, seven company employees in the US who were killed in 1886 for going on a strike demanding an eight-hour workday. During the Congress of the Second International held in Paris in 1889 with representatives of workers from several European countries, the French delegation presented the initiative of preserving the memory of the Chicago martyrs through public demonstrations for better working conditions.
One year later, the first May Day was celebrated in different parts of the world, including Queensland.
