Muslim Women’s Arts Project

This project aimed to engage participants, artists and audiences in a dialogue about identity, self-determination and personal development and change. The artists engage with complex, often confronting ideas through a diversity of media and concepts that reflect the rich complexity of the Australian Muslim experience.

Mana Nowbar: Longing
This installation by Iranian born artist, Mana Nowbar is a series of charcoal and ink works on paper and canvas covering the outside walls of a wood structure in the shape of a house.

Celebrate Islamic Culture through creative crafts. Join Fatima Ismail and create innovative African inspired beads and collages from an array of colourful recycled papers.

Paper art extravaganza with artist Rukayya Abdoola

Celebrate Islamic Culture through visual arts. Be inspired by Islamic masonry and intricate decorative buildings. Explore geometric shapes, repetition of images and pattern making. Create colourful creative 2 and 3 dimensional small scale artworks using special papers and cards.

Friday 7 March, 3.30pm – 4.45pm

For ages: 6 to 12 years (carers to remain with children under 7 years)

Access to the printing press for experienced printmakers

Use the workshop space and printing press to work independently and create your own prints. The gallery will provide access to the printing press, basic papers and water based printing inks. Experience in using a printing press is essential. This is a non-tutored session for experienced printmakers only. You will be working individually without tuition or technical assistance.

Concrete poetry with artist Shamime Mustapha

A celebration of Islamic Culture through the visual arts. Join Shamime Mustapha for a linguistic exploration of imagery. Create drawn artworks from text and creative use of calligraphy. Utilise organic forms within lettering. Choose your own themes: animals, people etc. and work in coloured
felt-tip pens.

Decorative tile painting with artist Shamime Mustapha

Celebrate Islamic Culture through visual arts. Moroccan tiles are known for their beauty. Decorate your own single tile with intricate
pen work.

Tuesday 4 March, 11am – 1pm

For ages: Adultsand older teens
Self reflection through mirrored mosaic with artist Shamime Mustapha

Create mosaic work on a mirrored tile. The mirror is a reminder of self reflection. Experiment with geometric stylisation and repetition of images together with organic flowing forms. Work with ready made mosaic tiles and fine Artline pens.

Paper art: create cards or small scale works with artist Rukayya Abdoola

Be inspired by Islamic masonry and intricate decorative buildings. Explore elements of geometric shapes, repetition and pattern. Create personalised cards or small scale artworks from a selection of papers.

Writing workshop with the editor of the Australian Muslim Times Rehana Bibi

Join Rehana Bibi, Editor of the Australian Muslim Times, who will share her knowledge of creative language skills and editing. Learn how to personalise text and understand the significance of language in culture. Equip yourself with the special skills in writing personalised speeches.

Music in the Gallery and free family fun day: A Celebration of Islamic Culture through the Arts

Celebrate the rich and diverse culture of Islamic arts through visual art, music, performance and food. Enjoy family activities, contemporary and traditional art and crafts, demonstrations and henna painting and displays.
