Refugee Excision Bill in Senate today or tomorrow

Dear all

The Government’s excision bill is on the Senate schedule for today (14 May 2013), though it probably won’t actually come on until tomorrow.

Senator Hanson young will be moving the three amendments enclosed, which seek to amend the Migration Act in regards to offshore transfers so that

  1. Media to have access to offshore processing places
  2. Australian Human RIghts Commissioner to have access to offshore processing places
  3. No children and families with children to be transferred offshore at all, and those on Manus to be brought back to Aust immediately

    Amendments attached.

It would be of great assistance if you could support these amendmentsby emails to the Minister and to Scott Morrison and spread the word amongst your networks, even though Budget will obviously dominate the next day or so

Separately, please also note that Senator Hanson Young has a motion on right to work for Asylum Seekers and refs for vote in the Senate on Thursday 16, would be good to lobby contacts from other parties to support

*1218 Senator Hanson-Young: To move—That the Senate calls for all asylum seekers and refugees who are released into the community on a bridging visa to be granted the right to work and support themselves.
