Harsh measures directed at deterring asylum seekers are meant to “save lives at sea”, but do our politicians (and the border protection system they have created) really care about people drowning at sea? Tony Kevin, author of Reluctant Rescuers, says serious questions need to be asked about Australia’s response to boats in distress.

Tony Kevin is a former Australian ambassador whose courageous questions in 2002 influenced a Senate inquiry to delve into the sinking of the SIEV-X. He later wrote the prizewinning investigative book A Certain Maritime Incident: the sinking of the SIEV-X.
