‘Stand for Queensland’ State-wide Community Day of Action
The Stand for Queensland State-wide Community Day of Action is fast approaching.
Attached are the following resources for promoting the Day of Action:
- PDF flyer promoting the Brisbane event;
- A word flyer that you can edit and add details of workplace events;
- An order form where you can directly order merchandise for the Day of Action or for promoting the campaign through your membership.

Mackay and Moranbah Week of Action
The Mackay and Moranbah Week of Action is confirmed for 22—26 October 2012.
A draft schedule of events will be released shortly, however key activities will occur as follows:

22 October- evening QCU Branch meeting and Delegates Welcome function
23 October QCU Executive meeting
24 October workplace events
25 October Moranbah (optional)
26 October Mackay and Moranbah Delegates debrief
Please find attached an enrolment form for Mackay and Moranbah delegates to attend the preparation session on 10 October 2012. Please note: the return date for enrolment is 28 September 2012
This event is critically important to ensure delegates have a plan to strengthen their union during the Week of Action.
2012 State Wage Case
On 16 August 2012 the Queensland Industrial Relations Commission handed down its decision in the 2012 State Wage Case. The commission awarded an increase of 2.9% or $20.50 per week, whichever is the greater.
This decision which also increases allowances by 2.9% is the same as the increase awarded by Fair work Australia in the 2012 Annual Wage Review.
The increase lifts the Queensland Minimum Wage to $630.70 per week which remains ahead of the Federal Minimum Wage of $606.40.
National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)
Many affiliates are calling on all members to show their support for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).
The NDIS is a ground-breaking reform to make a real improvement to the lives of people with a disability, their families and their carers. It is the sort of health reform that should have been passed many years ago.
Premier Newman recently commented that Queensland cannot afford the NDIS trial. Yet his own June 2012 Treasury booklet describes Queenslands economic position as one of relative financial strength compared with other Australian states.
Please take the time to follow the link below to join the campaign which calls upon Premier Newman to urgently reassess the state governments funding commitments, to immediately place disability support as the states highest priority.

In the video you can see a call for industrial action – moved by Sarah at [1:00:18] – the motion was briefly discussed by the chairperson and John Battams (QCU President), the chairperson then accepted and put the motion to the delegates.
As you can see this was at end of meeting, there was no discussion called for nor any attempt to have a debate of how delegates could organise the campaign against job and community sector cuts. The decision making is top-down with the QCU president asking delegates to endorse a 1,000 day campaign without discussion of strategy or aims. Are the aims industrial? Or are they merely political?
The chairperson then closed the meeting.
The most important part of organising against the government was put to the meeting at the very end and then delegates were asked to leave … the QCU president had just said that they wanted a 1,000 day campaign (code for till the next election).
How many jobs will have been lost, how many community organisations and services cut by then?
And would a Labor government do it any different, tell the world that Queensland is the smart state while they sell our most important public asset — Queensland Rail.
The campaign will have to be an extra-parliamentary campaign not one directed at the parliament.
