Here’s some sites to track the cyclone and the wind directions
www.seabreeze.com.au This shows actual wind direction and speeds (knots) from the anemometers up and down Moreton Bay, both currently and predicted. Cape Moreton will always show higher speed due to the height of the anemometer above sea level. Elevated terrain always experiences higher wind speeds. Seabreeze wind speed predictions are not too bad at the moment, in open areas averaging around 40 knots but gusts can be 40% higher.
It currently shows how the wind speed and direction will change as it passes over Brisbane airport. But BoM warnings are quite a bit higher, in excess of 50 knots (93km/h) sustained averages.
Conversion to km per hr is multiple knots x 1.852
Power in the wind is proportional to wind speed cube. Double the wind speed means 8 times the wind power, and 4 times the force on buildings!!
www.windy.com This site again uses predictions of the cyclone’s path and intensity (wind speed – knots) and the arrows show the wind direction as it travels towards us. You can expand the image and check the track with the day slider at the bottom of the screen. It’s been very accurate so far and uses excellent models. It is useful to understand how the wind speed and direction can change as the cyclone travels over you. The strongest winds are on the southern side of the cyclone. If the eye comes right over us, winds swing from southerly to northerly, 180 degrees.
BoM is still saying category 2 (which is bad enough) with gusts to 155km/hr but may intensify due to warmer water near the coast (not good). That’s outside anything we have experienced, except briefly in some storms.
Shelter in the strongest part of the house – generally the bathroom.
Keep windows/doors closed
