On one level the Eureka stockade was a dispute over mining licences at Ballarat gold diggings in 1854. However look at the people that made up the rebellion and the allegiance they swore to each other, namely:
“We swear by the Southern Cross to stand truly by each other and fight to defend our rights and liberties“
We can see that it was more than a licence dispute. A comrade has pointed out that the initial dispute was over the refusal of landowners and commercial interests to pay any tax which the governor then had to get entirely from the miners.
Was Eureka about one class rebelling against the laws of the ruling elite in Victoria or was it part of a movement for a better world, a stuggle for democratic rights?
WBT thoroughly recommends this commemoration of radical aspects of the rebellion at Eureka Stockade.
There are aspects of what happened in Ballarat in the 1850s still untouched in the popular press. Take, for example, Chinese participation in the gold rush and subsequent ‘assimilation’ into Australian society despite racist laws prohibiting Asian people from becoming citizens (i.e. White Australia policy).
