Australia’s solar industry is going gangbusters. Soon it is likely to provide 75% of daytime electricity. Yet the coal lobbyists want to be able to turn off solar on rooftops by introducing new inverters. The reason is the grid is set up to provide distribution of electricity from a central source i.e. coal fired power stations.
SHAYNE JAENISCH (solar installer in South Australia): We get a lot more people now working from home. They’re fully aware by working at home their power bills are going to go up. And solar works best during the day. It only works during the day. So, if their electricity usage during the day goes up, solar is the one thing that can help them reduce their power bills.
How can people trust anything the federal energy minister Angus Taylor says? Especially when his government continues to push fossil fuels like gas?
An essential service like energy is too important to be in the hands of private enterprise. Yet the South Australian government privatised its electricity system in the 1980s. The whole system went into meltdown in 2016.
The South Australian blackout of 2016 was a widespread power outage in South Australia that occurred as a result of storm damage to electricity transmission infrastructure on 28 September 2016. The cascading failure of the electricity transmission network resulted in almost the entire state losing its electricity supply, affecting 850,000 SA customers. – Wikipedia
