Iraq in Revolt

This story from Ray Bergman not heard on national or international news … nor on SBS or on ABC despite over 350 dead and 15,000 injured in the revolt in Baghdad … 16 years on from ‘shock & awe‘. No international war crime indictments, no accountability from Bush, Blair or Howard.

Protesters say that Iranian and American leaders have expanded the occupation. Some of the oldest inhabitants of Iraq (the Assyrians) and people from provincial cities all over the country are bringing water, food, and medical supplies to unarmed demonstrators.

Demonstrators at the ‘Turkish restaurant’ near Tahrir Square are protesting the continuing theft of Iraq’s resources by foreign occupation forces, and by traitors serving foreign powers, that keep the whole country in poverty and without basic government services that should be directed to the needs of the people, and not to an elite that serves foreign powers – whether the USA or Iran!

We’ve created this appeal on Facebook, to bring to Baghdad the supplies needed by the protesters in Tahrir Square, The Capital’s Center”.

Opinion
I think the stage has been reached in many quarters where people are trying desperately to salvage a decent future for their children and grandchildren.

The current revolution in Iraq has teenagers with their grandparents on the streets, with mothers and fathers ferrying water, food and medical supplies to their children and parents!

It’s actually the grandparents who are saying they will fight to death to see a better future for their grandchildren!

“More than 300 martyrs and more than 12 thousand wounded, and more than 3700 kidnapped! This is a sign of cruelty and a regime that is unmistakably like ISIS itself! – Aqeel Al-Hajer

“During the month of October 2019 the Iraqi people started the greatest revolution existing in Iraqi history. The fight to determine whether we will have a means of existence or not! It’s the path to live freely and in a chamber of life, or to live under slavery and its darkness. The choice between darkness and the light. Iraqis path will always be the choice to live freely without restrictions, after all our ancestors were the founders of the first human rights laws.”

Announcement of the Iraqi National initiative abroad to support the uprising…

“Calling for the rapid attention of Iraqi National Committees abroad to support the national uprising, consisting of cultural, academic, social and political elements, which stand against fascism, against occupation and the subverted political process, to conduct initiatives all with external media and international human rights bodies, to follow the developments and trends of events as they unfold, and to contribute to the ongoing national dialogue on the next new steps to be taken, in particular the form of the new democratic National System, which raises the tasks of independence and reconstruction to get out of the current hellish disaster and bring Iraq back from control by foreign powers!”

Unconfirmed reports 3 hours ago today (04-Nov-2019) say that pro-Iranian Adel Abdul Mahdi, the current Prime Minister of Iraq, has been kidnapped by USA troops and placed in the American Embassy!

    15-Nov-2019

A series of explosions ripped through central Baghdad on Friday night, and appeared to target protests which have raged since early October, killing at least three people.

Some unconfirmed reports have cited four dead and a dozen wounded in a situation where the casualty toll is expected to climb. The final in a string of blasts was identified according to early reports and video as a car bomb in Tahrir Square, which did the worst damage, killing and wounding multiple protesters.

Though anti-corruption and anti-government demonstrations have witnessed violent clashes with police, resulting at this point in over 300 dead and an estimated 15,000 wounded, the bombing escalates things to a new level of violence.

Both protest leaders and international media have blamed security forces for the ratcheting violence due to occasions where they’ve used live fire to disperse crowds. Pro-Iran Iraqi militias have also been blamed for attempting to brutally put down protests.

Alternately, pro-Iranian politicians and military leaders in Baghdad have blamed the United States and Israel for fueling unrest in order to curtail Iranian influence.

The bombing will most likely escalate the intensity of protests as Iraq stands of the brink of possible renewed sectarian civil war.

  3. No media reports despite ... says:

11-11-2019 According to the Human Rights Parliamentary Committee of Iraq, since the beginning of this month, casualties across Iraq are 319 dead, and more than 15 thousand wounded. The vast majority of the victims are protesters. – Ray

The ABC has only two correspondents in the Middle East: Eric Tlozek and Adam Harvey in ABC’s bureaus in Jerusalem and Beirut. There is a lot happening there so little wonder we have heard nothing about Baghdad.

  4. 01-Nov-2019

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad gave an interview to a SANA reporter who asked about the United States intention to keep troops in Syria against the will of the Syrian people and his response applies also to the intention to keep United States troops in Iraq against the will of the Iraqi people:

“If there is resistance, the fate of the Americans will be similar to their fate in Iraq. The natural role of the state in this case is to provide all the necessary conditions and necessary support to any popular resistance against the occupier…, we must not forget that the main agents which brought the Americans, the Turks and others to this region are Syrians acting as agents of foreigners – Syrian traitors.

We should all be united against occupation.

When we reach this state, I assure you that the Americans will leave on their own accord because they will have no opportunity to remain in Syria; although America is a superpower, it will not be able to remain in Syria.

This is something we saw in Lebanon at a certain point and in Iraq at a later stage.

  5. Three killed in Baghdad says:

3 killed in central Baghdad on 1st November 2019 in the biggest daily protests since the fall of Saddam. These protests have been going on daily for the past month resulting in hundreds of young people killed during October.

  6. Petition ... says:

The Honorable Mr. Antonio Guarez , UN Secretary General
The Honorable Salil Shetty, Amnesty International Secretary General
The Honorable Kenneth Roth, Human Rights Watch Executive Director

We, the undersigned, request you to mandate an independent international commission to investigate horrible crimes committed by the Iraqi authorities, including the use of bombs and toxic gases, and the internationally banned use of live bullets against peaceful civilian demonstrators since 1 October this year until today, where the death toll is in the hundreds, most of them under the age of 20 years, and nearly 15,000 injured ( according to reports of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in the Iraqi parliament), many of them suffering from permanent physical malformations as a result of inhumane actions against these unarmed protesters.

That the protesters come from thousands of families that live in appalling conditions, even though they’re in a rich country like Iraq, with thousands of young university graduates remaining unemployed, and with no government solutions to assist them and save them from extreme difficulties due to poor government services. These young people now join those segments of the middle class that join with unions and intellectuals to demand an end to the rampant corruption by those in political control of the country, and the theft of public money including the budget that was allocated to rebuild the infrastructure destroyed as a result of the wars of the former regime. Poor quality of services, recession and economic insecurity, and the presence of power and money in the hands of criminals has led to an uprising of the people involving all layers and classes of the Iraqi society request a fix to intolerable conditions.

Instead of offering real reforms to the people, the Iraqi government used bullets and forbidden poisoning gas bombs. Amnesty International issued a report on October 29, 2019 on these bombs that kill thousands of these peaceful undefended demonstrators.

We request your esteemed organizations to:

Mandate an international independent committee to investigate the scale and depth of crimes committed against demonstrators, including the use of poison gases and forbidden bombs against civilians, and to identify the top levels of authorities who gave the orders to shoot and kill people. Iraqi people have no trust in committees established by a corrupted government that is accused itself of killing its own people.
Taking measures to forbid Iraqi Authorities from using the military class gas bombs that do not conform with International norms to deal with demonstrators .
We appreciate all your efforts to defend human rights and taking measures to protect the demonstrators of Iraq.

Copy of the same petition will be delivered to the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the permanent members of the UN Security Council.

  7. Kidnapping ... says:

Posted 17 hours ago: Local and international media news reported by activists in Iraq confirmed the kidnapping of an activist and paramedic in Baghdad by masked members of an militia loyal to Iran after a series of threats to target activists and participants in the Iraqi revolutionary movement. Saba al-Mahdawi was kidnapped by masked armed militias affiliated with parties and movements loyal to Iran for her role in the demonstrations of the Iraqi revolution after she returned from Tahrir Square to the Bayaa area south of Baghdad

We, as Iraqi National Committees, call on the Bar Association and civil society organizations to put pressure on the government authorities to release her. (These militias loyal to Iran support the current Iraqi government.)

Activists should take all means of caution and protection to avoid arrest and kidnapping, as well as paying attention to those lurking among them who have a great role in dirty operations aimed at reducing and containing the uprising.

  8. Young & Old support ... says:
