Labour Day award for union organiser

Congratulations to Queensland Division of the NTEU for winning the Labour Day award for best small publication. NTEU Qld State Organiser, Lachlan Hurse, (pictured with the award) is no stranger to layout and design. Back in the day, Lachlan spent many hours doing the layout on an old IBM XT computer using Ventura typsetting software perfecting those skills in opposition to the Bjelke-Petersen government. A keen photographer, he has a great archive of photos of union, political rallies and musical events. Lachlan is a member of the band Jumping Fences which sponsors regular gigs each month at Kurilpa Hall in West End called Foco Nuevo.

Solidarity Brother!

Some of Lachlan’s designs

Rock against Petersen Sat. July 2nd. Baroona Hall Caxton St

Rock against Petersen Poster
Lachlan hand drew the poster in red and black on large computer printout. In the lower right corner he drew a caricature of student demonstrators pushing a ball with the text ‘A to Z conflict The Bystanders’. The large ball is pressing against Joh Bjelke-Petersen who is standing against a wall. Text at base of poster: Rally against Bjelke-Petersen Aug. 5th, King George Square. I think the year was 1982. Found in State Library of Queensland collection.

Vintage Reds Banner
One of the comrades, Anna, had this to say about Lachlan’s banner:

“This pic is the recently-completed, and very beautiful, banner for Brisbane’s Vintage Reds, retired unionists. Made by more creative comrades than me, it will get its first airing at Brisbane’s Change the Rules rally next Tuesday 20 November at 12.30pm, Emma Miller Place.”
