Burning Stalin & Nixon @ UQ union complex

There will be a meeting at 5.30pm on Thursday 14 February in Room 220 of the Michie Building, St Lucia campus, to plan for the rally on the 25th and discuss further activities. I have attached a revised version of the rally flyer, with Andrew Bartlett (for 4ZZZ) and Carole Ferrier added to the speaking list.

In other UQ news, a well-attended meeting of the UQ branch of the NTEU has voted overwhelmingly to reject a proposed partnership between the Ramsay Centre and the university to offer a major in Western Civilisation. Today’s Australian newspaper covered the story.

Finally, three photos of interest.

Burning Stalin & Nixon in 1969 at UQ Union Complex

The first, taken in 1969, shows UQ students burning images of Stalin and Nixon. The occasion is not documented. Perhaps there wasn’t one, it’s simply what one did between lectures, like drinking a flat white.

The second shot shows the campus in 1963, with the brand-spanking-new UQU buildings on the left. This was before the refec was extended and the Schonell Theatre added. By zooming in you can see the original forum area adjacent to the Student Union Building. After a garden was plonked in the middle of this space, the forum area was reconstituted in the area outside the refec.

The third photo shows one of Brisbane’s great bands, The Go-Betweens, earning their keep at the Refec in the late 70s.
