  1. QCU's position ... says:

QCU take on this issue is below …

    Dear ian

Labour Day provides us with the opportunity to reflect upon the achievements of workers and their unions for our community.

Queenslanders have celebrated Labour Day in May for more than 100 years — even when the Newman Government moved the public holiday to October.

Even though the Labour Day public holiday will not return to May until 2016, Labour Day is on throughout the weekend of May 2 and 3 — and across the state from Cairns all the way down to the Gold Coast — with marches and family fun days with free rides, music and events and food and drinks available.

The big Brisbane march commencing on Sunday May 3 at 10am.

To find information about the Labour Day activities in your area, follow this link.

Labour Day recognises the vast majority of the community who go about their jobs with little or no recognition. It shows that union values are community values. It’s all about getting a fair go.

Please join us for a March and Family Fun Day on the Labour Day weekend.

I look forward to seeing you there.

    1. March on May 1st? ... says:

Good question … in the forty years I have been going to Labour Day Marches, the ALP has never celebrated International Workers Day on May 1st.

The ALP celebrates Labour Day which falls on the first Monday in May and, until Campbell-Newmann changed it to October, this was always a public holiday.

When Opposition Leader, Annastacia Palaszczuk said: “Labour Day will always be in May just as it has been since the state’s first Labour Day march was held in Barcaldine in 1891 by striking shearers.”

In my living memory, the unions have fallen in behind the ALP choosing to march on Labour Day, not 1st May.

      in solidarity
