Byron Bay is noted for its surfing and, surprisingly, there is a surf club in Gaza. Byron Bay and Gaza are both coastal towns and relish seaborne activities. While we in Byron can sail off into the Pacific without hindrance Gaza’s fishermen are limited to just 3 nautical miles offshore. They are regularly blasted by the Israeli navy even though they comply with the limit. Gaza’s population is about 1.8 million with roughly half under 18 years. Israel has attacked it three times in the last seven years using the most sophisticated weapons and even with some considered experimental as the interview with Norwegian Dr Mads Gilbert indicates.
If Byron Bay with its influx of about 1.3 million tourists per annum, is twinned with Gaza then we may create a ray of hope for this deeply traumatised people and spread the word amongst our visitors about the dire plight of Gaza, the world’s biggest prison.
