On Monday 11 February 2013 Bob Carnegie will be appearing in the Federal 
Magistrates Court in Brisbane on 54 charges of criminal contempt arising from his role as community leader of the 9-week strike at the Queensland Children’s Hospital construction site in August-October last year.
Construction company AbiGroup, part of the giant Lend Lease group, has brought these charges against Bob in a blatant attempt to victimise anyone lending support to trade unions in disputes with employers. These charges are a clear threat to any community activist.

How is Bob Carnegie supposed to get a fair trial with this hype from the Attorney General? It was Lend Lease who stepped outside the industrial relations system in the first place by insisting that AbiGroup refuse to sign an EBA with workers at the Queensland Children’s Hospital site (QCH).

Feedback sought on construction code guidelines
The Newman Government wants feedback on guidelines for the building and construction code of practice to prevent unnecessary time delays and cost blow-outs on major infrastructure projects.
Attorney General Jarrod Bleijie said he was concerned by ABS statistics for the September quarter which showed Queensland industrial action accounted for 46 per cent of working days lost to disputes in the country.
“To have almost half of all action coming from Queensland is extremely worrying but when you look at incidents like last year’s Children’s Hospital dispute, it is not surprising,” Mr Bleijie said.
“That dispute alone accounted for an estimated 15,000 work days lost between August and October last year and cost the State Government an estimated $7.4 million.

A VETERAN unionist is facing more than 50 charges over protests at the $1.4 billion Queensland Children’s Hospital building site last year during a two month-long dispute with Lend Lease subsidiary Abigroup.
