Harsh measures directed at deterring asylum seekers are meant to “save lives at sea”, but do our politicians (and the border protection system they have created) really care about people drowning at sea? Tony Kevin, author of Reluctant Rescuers, says serious questions need to be asked about Australia’s response to boats in distress.

Tony Kevin is a former Australian ambassador whose courageous questions in 2002 influenced a Senate inquiry to delve into the sinking of the SIEV-X. He later wrote the prizewinning investigative book “A Certain Maritime Incident: the sinking of the SIEV-X”

Please note that Tony Kevin will also make an appearance at an Afghan Hazara community event on Tuesday 16th October at 7pm.
Where: Islamic College of Brisbane, 45 Acacia Rd, Karawatha (cnr Compton Rd). Although it is a Hazara event, all members of the public are welcome. Further info: Hassan, ph.0423 907 416. This event may suit those who live in the southern suburbs.
