We arrive at our last Foco Nuevo for 2010, and go out with a night full of fun and enjoyment. We started the year without a home, and ended it settling in to Kurilpa Hall, where we will be continuing next year, starting in February. So come along and celebrate our year of wonderful music with us and our guest musicians; BUMS and Tim O’Brien.
BUMS The Brisbane Ukulele Musicians Society has a cast of 50s, but tonight’s show features under a dozen of them, performing a variety of music from the 30s to the 80s, with a recent movie theme thrown in. Their ukes range from bass (the first uke band in Australia to use the U-Bass) and baritone through tenor to concert and soprano. They have performed at both Australian Uke Festivals and a range of folk and country music clubs, and (increasingly) at Christmas gigs and other celebrations. “Want Fun? Get BUMS Out!”
Tim O’Brien is a well-known contemporary finger-style guitarist who has performed and taught throughout Queensland for many years. Tim performs a great mix of acoustic fingerstyle music. Using a range of guitars, from the not often heard Baritone Resonator guitar, as well as a Martin Fingerstyle guitar and maybe even the less heard Banjo/Guitar. Tim said that after performing on his Banjo/Guitar ‘You’ll understand why it is a not often heard instrument and maybe sometime before you want to hear it again.’ [website].
Jumping Fences the song-writing partnership of Lachlan Hurse and Sue Monk, play a unique mix of original and Latin American songs, bridging the gap between Australian and World music. Their songs, heard from Brisbane factories to concerts in Havana, have evocative lyrics with compelling vocals and rhythm to match. For our last Foco Nuevo of the year we’ll have our full complement of musicians, Ross Gwyther, James Harper, Dan Simpson and Robbie Stewart. [website]
Finally a special thanks to Maggie for her wonderful cakes, to Mara for her hard work on the sound mixing, our helpers on the door – Aleea, Amanda, Shanti and Jim, to our hosts at Kurilpa Hall, as well as all our guest musicians and to our appreciative audiences for supporting us through the year.
Hope to see you on the night
Lachlan and Sue
