Protest against more settlements in Palestine

Editor’s Note: It is interesting that these marches are being led by secular groups such as The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and the Democratic Front.
Look closely at the flags at the head of the marches and read the reports from the Democratic front website:

In Bil’in, a village in western Ramallah, Israelis used force to disperse demonstrators, injuring dozens and asphyxiating two.

On Monday, 25 July [2008], a video was broadcast revealing Isreali forces deliberately shooting at Palestinians, who were participating in a peaceful march against the Wall.

These groups are for unity and a secular opposition to the settlements. Their leaders are in jail, many have been killed.

A report from al jazeera in Bil’in

Hundreds of Palestinian villagers have made a short but symbolic march to the separation wall that Israel has built on their land, a non-violent protests that they regularly undertake.

Equally, the protesters, marching from the village of Bilin, are regularly met with a violent response from the Israeli army.

“The village of Bilin is literally on the frontline of Israel’s confiscation of Palestinian land and the construction of its separation barrier,” Jacky Rowland, Al Jazeera’s correspondent reporting from the village, said.

“Later today the villagers of Bilin will protest the fact that not only they, but also five neighbouring villages, have lost their land which has been seized to build an Israeli settlement.

“This huge settlement will result in 40,000 Jewish settlers living on occupied land here in the West Bank and as Prime Minister [Binyamin] Netanyahu is planning to give the go ahead for even more of these settlement homes to be built,” she said.

Netanyahu is set to approve plans to build hundreds of new homes on Palestinian land in the occupied West Bank, before considering US demands for a construction freeze.

  2. Remember Sabra & Shatila says:

[Editors Note: Thanks to Anas for the links. He has reminded us of our past which is important. The first Palestinian Human Rights Group in Brisbane was set up after the massacres at Shabra & Shatilla in 1982 which organised a rally in King George Square. This is not to say that this was the first solidarity action with the Palestinians in Brisbane. I remember there was a forum organised at the University of Queenalnd in 1974 or 75 to put the Palestinian point of view. However it is true to say that 1982 was the first time in Brisbane that a section of the Labor party ALP or the Communist Party of Australia CPA made any real attempts to understand the Palestinian cause.

I have posted the YouTube clips that Anas sent below. The contents of the second clip are graphic and not for viewing by children, becasue these were horrors done to children by the state of Israel. These horrors are too great.

The September of 27 years ago.
Today is a day that has been forgotten in the history books of the world.
Today is a day, in the month of September that means something different to me than to anyone else in the world. It should mean the same to you. It should mean the same to the world.
Today is the 27th Anniversary of the Sabra and Shatila Massacres of the Palestinians in Lebanon committed by Ariel Sharon and Israel.

  3. Justice for Palestine meeting says:

    Hi all,

There will be a Justice for Palestine meeting tomorrow, Wednesday Sept 16, at 6:30pm in the TLC Building (2nd floor), 16 Peel St, South Brisbane.

It is only one month to go until the Palestinian Days Film Festival, so it would be great to have all hands on deck to help out with the final preparations and publicity efforts. The meeting will also finalise plans for the September 25 rally.

    Please come along!

    in solidarity,
    Kathy

Bil’in demo another arrest and lots of gas 07 08 09

At today’s weekly non-violent demonstration, the occupation forces arrested yet another Palestinian man, Rany Ayoub Yousef Najar. He is a local cameraman who was wearing the clearly visible green jacket of the Press at the time of his arrest.

Once the protesters arrived close to the Separation Wall, activists from Italy, France, Israel and Bil’in were addressing the soldiers, demanding an end to the military occupation and the Wall. Then the chanting of Palestinian freedom slogan resumed while some of the activists tried to open the gate at the Green Line without success.

The Army threw a multiple of tear gas and sound bombs into the crowd. Then the first arrest occurred. After having blindfolded and handcuffed the cameraman, the soldiers entered through the gate a second time. But the air was still heavy with tear gas which made the soldiers retreat to their outpost without arresting anyone else.

The protesters held their ground and were soon sprayed with the foul chemical water and more tear gas. After one hour into the demonstration, the protesters returned back to the village.
